What is an intrauterine device?
Called an IUD for short, it is a small, plastic, T-shaped device with a string attached to the end. The IUD is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Placement requires a visit to your doctor. After your Mirena IUD is put in place, you may have sex, swim, exercise, and use tampons as soon as you want to. The IUD stays in your uterus until your doctor removes it.
Mirena IUD slowly releases small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel(commonly used in birth control pills) into the lining of your uterus. This is thought to thicken your cervical mucous which may make it harder for the sperm to join with an egg.
