NuvaRing

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 10:40 am

What is NuvaRing?

NuvaRing is a flexible contraceptive ring that is used to prevent pregnancy. Roughly two inches in diameter, you insert the ring into your vagina only once a month. The muscles in your vaginal wall help keep NuvaRing set in place for three weeks. During this time, it slowly releases a low dose of hormones that will prevent pregnancy.

When your 21 days are completed, simply remove NuvaRing to allow your body to have it’s natural menstrual cycle. After seven days, a new ring should be inserted for continued prevention of pregnancy.

How does NuvaRing work?

The ring contains two hormones, estrogen and progestin which stop your ovaries from producing mature eggs. The hormone release is activated by the contact of NuvaRing with your vagina. Your vaginal wall absorbs the hormones and distributes them into your bloodstream. When used as directed NuvaRing is 99% effective.

NuvaRing provides a low and steady hormone delivery. This constant release allows for fewer hormonal ups and downs.

What are some advantages of NuvaRing?

  • Convenience. You don’t have to remember daily or weekly to take your birth control because NuvaRing is inserted monthly. Exact position is not important for effectiveness.
  • Discretion. You insert and remove the ring privately. Upon insertion most women and their partners won’t notice it’s there.
  • Low incidence of side effects and breakthrough bleeding.
  • Spontaniety.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects of NuvaRing are found to be similar to those of the pill and contraceptive patch. These symptoms usually resolve in the first 1-3 months of use.

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Breast tenderness
  • Irregular bleeding

Rare problems include blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden abdominal pain
  • Unexplained chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Severe headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Severe leg pain (calf or thigh area)
  • Weakness in one side of the body

If side effects persist or worsen while using NuvaRing, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

The morning-after pill for emergency contraception.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 1:07 pm

What is the morning-after pill?

The morning-after pill is a form of emergency contraception. It is used to prevent pregnancy after a woman has had unprotected sex or another birth control type has failed. The morning-after pill is not a substitute for routine birth control, and will not protect you from HIV and any other sexually transmitted diseases.

It is important to know that the morning-after pill is not an abortion pill. Emergency contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy, whereas the abortion pill terminates an established pregnancy.

How does it work?

The active ingredients in morning-after pills are similar to those in birth control pills, except in higher doses. Some morning-after pills contain only one hormone, progestin (Plan B), and others contain two, progestin and estrogen. Progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

How is the morning-after pill taken?

It comes in the form of two pills that are taken by mouth after unprotected sex. The first dose should be taken within 72 hours (of unprotected sex) followed by the second dose 12 hours later. It can reduce a woman’s risk of pregnancy by 89% when taken exactly as directed.

Since unprotected sex might happen when your doctor’s office is closed, getting a prescription for the morning-after pill in advance means that it will be there for you, in time, if you ever need it.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects can include nausea, abdominal pain, tiredness, headache, menstrual changes, dizziness, breast tenderness, and vomiting. Menstrual bleeding may be heavier or lighter, earlier or later after taking the morning-after pill. If your period is more than one week late, pregnancy should be considered.

If side effects persist or worsen while taking the morning-after pill always contact your doctor as soon as possible.

The Rhythm Method

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 9:40 am

What is it?

The rhythm method is a way to prevent pregnancy by not having sex around the time of a woman’s ovulation – the release of an egg during her monthly cycle. For couples who want to have a baby this method ensures that they are having sex at the time they are most likely to get pregnant.

How does the rhythm method work?

If the couple doesn’t have sex around the time of ovulation, then the woman can’t get pregnant. The key is knowing when ovulation occurs. Some couples use a calendar, a kit that tests the thickness of cervical mucus, a thermometer to measure body temperature, or a kit that tests for ovulation. The kits are more useful for couples who are trying to get pregnant. Ovulation’s most fertile period lasts 6 to 9 days and during this time the couple should not have unprotected sex.

How efficient is it?

Unfortunately, the rhythm method is not a reliable way to prevent pregnancy. About 25 out of 100 couples (over the course of a year) who rely on the rhythm method will have an accidental pregnancy. This is an average figure, so the chance of getting pregnant depends wholly on whether the couple uses one or more of the rhythm method tools correctly and consistently and if the couple has unprotected sex during the fertile period.

Preventing pregnancy with the rhythm method also depends on how consistent a woman’s ovulatory cycle is and how exact a couple is at keeping track of when she could be ovulating. Convenience of the method and using it correctly all the time are also key factors for not getting pregnant.

Does the rhythm method protect against STDs?

NO it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. While having sex, condoms must always be used with the rhythm method to protect against STDs.

Is it reliable?

For most women the rhythm method is not a reliable way to prevent pregnancy. It can be quite difficult to tell when a woman is fertile. The method requires a strong commitment to watching for body changes, keeping daily records, and most importantly, not having sex in the fertile period. Practice makes perfect, as it may take couples months to get this method right.

Who can you talk to about the rhythm method?

For an informed opinion it is best to talk to a doctor or counselor who is trained in fertility awareness. He or she can then teach the couple what it takes to practice the rhythm method accurately.

DEPO – PROVERA

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 11:27 am

What is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is a progestin–only birth control type. It is injected by your healthcare provider into your arm or buttocks every three months. Pregnancy prevention starts within 24 hours of being injected.

How does it prevent pregnancy?

Depo-Provera works in three ways:

  • Supresses ovulation
  • Makes the cervical mucus thick and tacky to help prevent the sperm from reaching the egg
  • Changes the uterine lining to stop the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.

How effective is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is so effective that out of 1,000 women who use it correctly and consistently, only three will become pregnant during the first year of use. The shot will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Using a condom will help to prevent the transmission of many STDs as well as offer you extra protection against pregnancy.

Who can use the shot?

Most women can use the shot. It may be best for you if:

  • You want very effective long-lasting birth control
  • Cannot take estrogen (Depo-Provera is progestin only)
  • Are unable to use other routine barrier methods (like a diaphragm) or take a daily pill

It may not be best for if you have:

  • Current serious blood clotting conditions
  • High blood pressure
  • High risk for heart disease
  • A history of severe depression
  • Liver disease, such as hepatitis, abnormal results on liver function tests, or a history of liver tumors

Are there any side effects?

In the first six to twelve months, irregular bleeding is the most common side effect for women using Depo-Provera.
Periods become fewer and lighter for most women, and often stop altogether. The longer a woman uses the shot, the more likely her periods will stop. It may take up to a year for periods to return after a woman’s last shot.

  • Some women will have longer, heavier periods.
  • Some may have increased light spotting and breakthrough bleeding.
  • Women who use the shot may have temporary bone thinning.

Less common side effects include:

  • Change in libido
  • Change of appetite, weight gain
  • Depression
  • Hair loss, or increased hair on the face or body
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness, dizziness
  • Skin rash or spotty darkening of the skin
  • Tender breasts

Warning Signs
Serious problems are rare. Tell your physician immediately if you have:

  • A new lump in your breast
  • Major depression
  • Severe pain in the stomach or abdomen
  • Unusually heavy or prolonged vaginal bleeding
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes

If side effects persist or worsen while taking Depo-Provera contact your doctor right away.

Birth control pills can cause low libido

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 11:27 am

Since 1945, the birth control pill has been one of the most popular contraceptives on the market. Easy to take, relatively inexpensive and accesible, the Pill is taken by more than 80% of American women. However, new research shows that the birth control pill may prevent more than just pregnancy. The Pill may also significantly, and perhaps permanently, hinder your sex drive.

How does the Birth Control Pill prevent pregnancy?

The birth control pill prevents pregnancy by inhibiting a woman’s natural monthly cycle of ovulation. Taken daily for three straight weeks, the Pill sends a combination of synthetic hormones (estrogen and progesterone) to your body. These hormones work to prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg for fertilization every month.

As convenient and reliable as the Pill may be there are some shortcomings. They can range from weight gain to depression. An additional shortcoming for many women can be low libido – which can be frustrating for both them and their partner.
In particular the Pill appears to:

  • Diminish libido
  • Decrease sexual enjoyment
  • Lessen lubrication during sexual intercourse

How does the Pill affect sex drive?

Research shows that the birth control pill affects sex drive because it acts directly on a woman’s sexual hormones. It seems that the birth control pill supresses the production of androgens, including testosterone, in a woman’s ovaries. Androgens have a direct effect on the enjoyment you receive during sex.

Additionally, the birth control pill also appears to increase the amount of sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in the body. SHBG is a protein that binds to testosterone, preventing a woman’s body from using it effectively. Increased levels of SHBG have been directly linked to decreased libido and sexual desire.

What can you do if your libido is low?

Speak with your doctor. Although the Pill may be adding to your decreased sexual desire, this does not mean you should stop taking it. Instead, have your doctor find another type of pill that may better suit your needs.

Of course, there may be other contributing factors. For instance stress, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and possibly a new medication can all play roles in your low libido. Take a look at your lifestyle and make changes where needed.

If you do decide to discontinue your birth control pill, be sure to use another birth control type, such as a condom or diaphragm, while having sex.

What really causes acne?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 2:46 pm

Despite polls showing that Americans still think acne is caused by not washing your face, or by stress or what you eat, the fact is that acne is caused by 3 major factors: the overproduction of oil by enlarged oil glands in the skin; blockage of the hair follicles that release the oil; and a growth of a certain bacteria within the hair follicles.

Acne can be treated with retinoids, hydroxyl acids, benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics to unblock the pores and reduce bacteria. Some medications are taken as pills, and others are treatments usually applied to the face at night. More aggressive treatment for stubborn acne might include chemical peels or microdermabrasion to unblock pores and stimulate new skin growth, which allows topical medications to penetrate the skin. Laser and light treatments use heat to damage the oil glands and light to target the bacteria.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you work with a medical skin specialist to find a treatment or combination of methods that works for you.

Can you gain weight by taking the Pill?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 12:01 pm

Although there have been theories about the hormones in the combined Pill causing fat increase, the belief appears to be largely created by word of mouth. Quite often OC (oral contraceptive) advertisers proudly state their Pill doesn’t cause any weight gain. This simply reinforces that the link between the two exists.

So are women imagining the weight gain? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean the Pill is the culprit. Teenagers are the largest group of “new” Pill users and weight gain is one of their biggest concerns. Women between 13 and 20 are naturally going to gain weight – it’s just part of growing up. Could these combined facts contribute to the belief that the Pill makes you fat?

Ok, but what about women who aren’t teens anymore? Sometimes the answer is they’ve simply put on a few pounds. Here again weight gain is a natural process of growing older – everyone’s bodies change over the course of their lifetime.

Although we can’t discount the fact that for some women the Pill definitely causes weight gain, it seems in most cases the weight change is minimal. Very rarely can it be 10 to 20 pounds. Some women can lose weight while on birth control pills.

When weight gain is related to the Pill, it can be caused by one or more factors:

  • Fluid retention due to the estrogen or progestin component of the Pill. This pattern of weight gain occurs in the month or so after starting the Pill.
  • Estrogen-induced weight gain increases fat, particularly in the hips, thighs and breasts, typically occurring after several months on the Pill.
  • Increased appetite and increased intake of food occurring over several years.
  • Depression accompanied by an increased intake of calories and/or a decrease in exercise.

Check with your doctor about newer oral contraceptives, like Yasmin, that have a tiny bit of diuretic in them. This can help with water retention, which can make you feel like you’ve gained weight.

YASMIN

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 12:23 pm

Low-dose combined oral contraceptive pills, like Yasmin, are effective and safe. In terms of preventing pregnancy, oral contraceptive pills are much more effective than standard barrier contraceptives like condoms and diaphragms. Taking your pill regularly can help eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancy.

In the past, the pill contained unwanted hormones that caused side effects in women. Today, oral contraceptive pills contain only a fraction of the amount of hormones. As a result, most women experience no side effects.

There are several additional benefits of taking Yasmin with drospirenone, including:

  • Reduced pain during menstruation
  • Most women find periods become less painful and more manageable.

  • Reduced blood loss during menstruation
  • If you suffer from heavy periods, Yasmin can also help by making them much lighter and easier to cope with and prevent problems associated with heavy blood loss (For example, iron deficiency).

  • More regular cycle
  • Yasmin regulates your menstrual cycle so that you know exactly when your period will come every month.

  • Reduced PMS symptoms
  • Many women find that especially Yasmin significantly reduces symptoms associated with pre-menstrual syndrome like bloating, water retention, tender breasts and stomach cramps.

  • Reduced risk of ovarian and womb cancer

What is Drospirenone?

Drospirenone is a synthetic hormone that mirrors the behavior of the progesterone hormone your body produces during menstruation. The major function of the progesterone hormone is to remove the water that is retained by your body during your cycle. This new synthetic agent is the first to mirror natural Progesterone in the way it combats water retention.

All modern contraceptive pills are extremely safe and effective at preventing pregnancy, but only Yasmin reduces the amount of water retained by the body during menstruation. Retaining water can cause:

  • Weight gain
  • Bloating
  • Decrease in energy
  • Tender breasts

By taking Yasmin with drospirenone, you will retain less water, drastically reducing your discomfort that can make you feel so uncomfortable in the second half of your menstrual cycle.
